UAE's Barakah Unit 1 Receives Operating License, Begins Fuel Loading

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corp. (ENEC)subsidiary Nawah Energy Co. ispreparing to load fuel into Unit 1 at theBarakah Nuclear Energy Plant, followingthe issue of an operating license thisweek by the UAE's Federal Authority forNuclear Regulation (FANR).The decision to issue the operatinglicence is the result of efforts madeby FANR since receiving ENEC'sapplication in 2015, FANR said. Itsassessments included reviews of theplant's layout and analysis of the site'slocation, as well as technical aspectsincluding the reactor design, coolingsystems, security arrangements,emergency preparedness, andradioactive waste management.FANR also assessed Nawah's readinessto operate the plant and ensure itssafety and security.
