Czech Republic Advances Plan for New Unit at Dukovany Plant

The Czech Republic has approved construction of a new reactor at the nation's existing Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant and plans to complete the project by 2036. The Czech parliamentary committee for the construction of new nuclear resources believes the project is an important step to maintain the nation's self-sufficiency in power generation. The committee claims that by 2040, renewable energy will not be able to cover all of the nation’s electricity demand and that nuclear power offers a clean alternative to coal.
