Czech Republic Advances New Reactor Project at Dukovany Site

The Czech government approved agreements with majority state-owned utility ČEZ on April 27, which outlines plans for building a new reactor that would be ready for service in 2036. While State and ČEZ officials have been discussing the nuclear power expansion project for years, costs and financing have been major concerns. The government hopes to propose a financing model by the end of May, before state officials begin project talks with the European Commission. The government has estimated that a new 1,200 MWe reactor to be built at ČEZ’s existing four-unit Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant, which would be able to supply one-tenth of annual consumption, would cost €5.1-€5.9 billion (US$5.5-6.4 billion).
