SENATE PANEL REJECTS LANGUAGE TO CAP LOAN GUARANTEES

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee rejected a proposal from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) last week that would have made it difficult to provide loan guarantees to a number of new nuclear plants under a new Clean Energy Deployment Act. Committee Chairman Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) and Ranking Member Lisa Murkow-ski (R-Alaska) have introduced legislation that would shift the energy loan guarantees program from the Department of Energy into an independent Clean Energy Deployment Agency, and during a markup May 6, Sanders offered an amendment that would restrict the Agency from awarding more than 20 percent of its total loan guarantees to any one technology.
