The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is consider- ing measures to boost nuclear energy in the United States, in partic- ular by expanding the Department of Energy's (DOE) Title 17 loan guarantee program originally implemented by the Energy Policy Act of 2005. At the same time, the panel is addressing the vexing issue of nuclear waste, now more problematic than ever since the Obama Administration has made it clear that the proposed Yucca Mountain repository is all but doomed (UIW Mar.2,p3).
