With the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster approaching, a bipartisan bill introduced in the Senate last week would require a United States strategic plan for international cooperation on nuclear power safety and increase U.S. efforts in the Convention on Nuclear Safety. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), Thomas Carper (D-Del.), and George Voinovich (R-Ohio), would compel the U.S. representative to the convention to "encourage the use of performance metric tools for countries to assess their own nuclear safety progress," according to a statement from Voinovich.
