A call to disclose unreported safety incidents from the past has caused controversy in Japan after utilities revealed 97 incidents hitherto unknown by the Japanese Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, part of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (METI). Last December, an investigation began to study industry archives and report any findings to METI by the end of March 2007. The aim of this was to improve industrial safety control.
