Demonstration of optimisation of the disposal facility at Drigg

The development concept of the Drigg site from the commencement of disposal operations in 1959 through to the present day has been continually updated to ensure compliance with best practice. It may be concluded that, based on current site understanding, continued development as specified in the current site development plan [Ref.10] is an appropriate solution for the optimum management of the long-term risks and associated uncertainties for the site. This is despite the risk target exceedences associated with historic disposals to the trenches. The further analysis of site risk/impact associated with specific management options, considered together with the removal of key pessimisms and an improved understanding of the key uncertainties, would support the progression of appropriate future management options for the disposal of LLW and for the Drigg site. Future inventory control, although important, will have a small overall effect on site impacts.
