Dear Madam, I wish to comment on the letter by Ted Hill published in Volume 10 issue 4 of Nuclear Future. The ASTRID management cannot be unaware of the prototype fast reactor (PFR) experience with boiler leaks. The fact that the French are nevertheless investing 650 million Euros in the project indicates that they believe the boiler problem can be solved - no doubt by taking all possible measures to ensure that the boiler tubes are defect-free. I remain perplexed as to why the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority does not have an involvement in this project or, if they retain serious misgivings on the use of sodium, in the parallel international gas-cooled fast reactor programme. An involvement in both would hedge their bets and be a low-risk investment towards turning the liability of actinide storage into an asset.
