Effects of renewable materials coatings on oil resistant properties of paper

摘要

Renewable materials of sodium alginate and alkali-treated potato starch were used for paper coating to enhance the oil resistant properties of paper based packaging products. The oil resistant properties of the paper after being coated with sodium alginate and alkali-treated starch were improved significantly. The results showed that the sodium alginate-coated paper exhibited excellent oil resistance when the coating weight reached 5 g/m(2) or higher, the percentage of area stained of the tested sample was less than 5% after 72 h testing at room temperature. For alkali-treated starch-coated paper, no oil penetration was observed for the tested paper with the coating weight at 3.5 g/m(2) at room temperature. The structural changes for the starch granules after alkali treatment were characterized by SEM.
