George saunders's resume reads like a parody of the getting-ready-to-be-a-writer's knockabout life. Came home and worked as knuckle-puller in slaughterhouse, doorman in Beverly Hills, convenience store flunkey ... bar band guitar player." Don't let this conventional unconventionality fool you; as a writer, Saunders, 37, really is an original. We hate to tell you that he's set his dark, funny first book CivilWarLand in Bad Decline (179 pages. Random House. $22), six short stories and a novella, in a cybernetic, post-apocalyptic dystopia, because that makes it sound godawful. But you're bound to find out anyway, when somebody grabs you and urges you to read it. Let us be the first.
