Digital survey maps of the Federal States Schleswig-Holstein and Sachsen-Anhalt are randomly checked for the quantitative relationship between surface water and neighbouring arble land. The checks reveal highly significant differences in the mean Water index (bank length/arable land). They may also be inter- Preted as difference between the natural spaces used for arable Purposes. The sample are used to calculate by means of GIS Technology various scenarios for arable land adjoining water Bodies.
