Recollections of the X Class Locomotives

Growing up in Napier in the early 1950s and becoming interested in railways, like Derek Cross I was fascinated by the X class locomotives, of which Napier had a number. By that stage they had all been converted to simple locomotives. With their high-pitched tapered boilers, they looked marvellous. The Westinghouse pump exhausted through the chimney and gave a distinctive musical sound.
