Taieri Gorge Railway

Taieri Gorge Railway Ltd has had a long genesis. From the 1960s Dunedin rail enthusiasts of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society had operated train excursions using New Zealand Railways' carriages throughout the southern half of the South Island.This worked well until the late-1970s when the demise of passenger traffic, especially commuter trains, caused NZR to announce that carriages would no longer be available for excursion running.The enthusiasts'response was to form the Otago Excursion Train Trust in 1978 with the aim of acquiring a fleet of carriages from NZR, and to provide the public of Otago with good quality excursions.
