摘要

I would like to congratulate Robert Arnold on his article in Observer 285, it is well researched, but there are one or two missing parts to the story. Serious inroads to the importance of Newmarket came when the Westfield yard was opened for traffic in the early 60s and the locomotive depot moved from Auckland to Westfield. But prior to the opening of Westfield all North Auckland traffic had to travel via Newmarket and the goods trains had to be double banked up the Parnell Bank to Newmarket and the bankers returned to Auckland.
