摘要

'Romantic'is a word generally over-used when describing the passage of little steam engines meandering along their stretches of railway or tramway, often within the confines of bush or across farmlands. Encountered now only on preserved heritage lines, it was once an everyday happening in the Kakanui district of North Otago where the McDonald's Lime Works tramway connected the works to the South Island Main Trunk at Whitecraig. It was an unforgettable sight in the 1950s to see and hear the little D Class locomotive, with a handful of L~A wagons in tow, making its leisurely way out to Whitecraig, funnel first, threading its path amongst the market gardens and pasture.
