摘要

I want to bring up the subject of photograph captions. Could we have a correction list in Observer, correcting mistakes as published in other magazines and newspapers? In Observer 316, page 179, it is quoted that railway staff had been on strike, but it does not say which union. In my 421/2 years as a member of the EFCA (Locomotive Engineers, Firemen and Cleaners Association), later LEA (Locomotive Engineers Association), and then ROI (Railway Officers' Institute), I was only on strike one day, in support of a Federation of Labour strike. Page 174 of the same issue shows W~A 217 leaving Blackball. No - it's about one rail length from arriving at Roa. On page 199, again in Observer 316, the bottom photograph shows an excursion train crossing the Ashburton River. Ashburton's wooden-pile bridge was replaced in 1933/34. I was born there in 1932, but was too young to remember the old bridge. The bridge in the photograph is at Temuka.
