Regarding Chris Barton's letter in the latest Observer on the use of headlights on locomotives in daylight, the practice couldn't have started in the late 1950s as there are plenty of photographs to prove otherwise. For instance there is a well-known NZR publicity photograph of two JA locomotives with the South Island Limited at speed near Sockburn in August 1964. The lead locomotive does not have its headlight on, nor has its generator been started.
