When I opened your latest issue of Observer, what a delight it was to come upon Mr Bates' article on Taumarunui. I taught at the Taumarunui District High School in 1948 and 1949. What memories he has evoked for me. I recall the busyness of the town (especially when the Australian Rugby team came in 1949!) and the warmth of the people very much, including bushmen and cricketers. The fascinating account of Mr Bates' work shows how vital were the railways to the district - the hub of the Trunk, indeed. My thanks to Mr Bates for his article, and to you for your excellent magazine.
