A key decision in 2012 by the Greater Wellington Rail Council (GWRC) was to buy 35 additional Matangi EMUs from Hyundai-Rotem and not refurbish part of the Ganz Mavag EMU fleet. In an interview for The Observer, Angus Gabara, the Manager Rail Operations for Metlink Public Transport, explained the reasons for this decision. 'Whole of life costs summarizes it in one phrase,' Mr Gabara said. 'We received a good price offer from Hyundai-Rotem for 35 more Matangi units or sets (70 cars). There was a big difference in the costs of the assets acquired over 35 years between the refurbishment option and purchasing more Matangi', he explained.
