Paul Simon Heighten was a leading member of the Railway Enthusiasts Society (RES) from its foundation in 1958 until his death on 9 May 2015. He was made a life member more than 30 years ago. He was the consummate railfan, embracing every aspect of the hobby and providing outstanding service to members of the Society and railway interests in the widest sense. Paul was a professional railwayman. He was born in Auckland on 10 January 1939 and a year later his family moved to the house at Kawau Road in Greenlane where Paul would stay for the rest of his life. His interest in railways began while he was at school and by the mid 1950s he joined New Zealand Railways and worked his way up the ladder to become a fireman and then driver. Paul's career culminated in a driver training role in which he was much respected.
