Pentagon RDT&E Follows Overall Budget Down

Department of Defense (DOD) expenditures on technology research, demonstration, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) programs start on a downward slope in fiscal year 1999 under the budget plan sent to Congress by the Clinton administration. For the coming fiscal year, the request for RDT&E programs across the armed forces is $36,078 billion, down from $36,659 billion in FY 1998. The administration's out-year spending plans call for the RDT&E budget to erode to $33 billion in 2001 before beginning to climb slightly.
