Both the Clinton administration and the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) are kicking off 1998 with initiatives designed to call attention to the conspicuous gaps that mar Americans' basic education and to the related lack of U.S. workers possessing skills that qualify them for information age jobs. Among administration actions expected to be announced today during a conference on the nation's high-end information technology (IT) workforce, held at the University of California-Berkeley, is a Department of Commerce effort to promote public appreciation for IT's importance to the U.S. economy and to encourage Americans both to prepare for and to pursue careers in IT fields.
