Students in Britain often say they want to "take up medicine" and set their sights on a university that will open its doors to them and a career as a "doctor". Some will fail to realise ' that medicine includes a diversity of jobs that goes much farther than just general practice, surgery or psychiatry. Many other specialised professionals are employed for skills that are officially categorised as "supplementary to medicine". These are practitioners who through their special scientific knowledge can help to detect disease, alleviate pain and enhance healing processes.
