If you struggle to recall where you left the keys, knowing that a mollusc would have no such trouble may be something you would like to forget. A form of episodic memory - the ability to recall when and where a particular experience happened -has been discovered in the common cuttlefish, the first time such skills have been seen in an invertebrate. Cuttlefish spend most of their time hiding from predators, only nipping into the open briefly to look for food. So, Christelle Jozet-Alves at the University of Caen Lower Normandy in France wondered whether episodic memory might help them maximise their foraging.
