Why did you develop Golden Rice? I'm concerned about food security. It's not just about calories, but also quality of food. In the early 1990s, Peter Beyer and I started on the problem of vitamin A deficiency causing child blindness and death. By 1999, we had a solution - a rice containing a precursor to vitamin A. It was a surprise that it worked because from the outset it looked totally crazy.
