OLD SCIENTIST

Start as you mean to go on. That's a pretty fair assessment of our first 60 years. On 22 November 1956, this magazine's very first edition hit the news stands, and today New Scientist is still living up to its promise, made in that first issue, to inform and entertain "all those men and women who are interested in scientific discovery and its industrial, commercial and social consequences". In the spirit of the post-war age, we also pledged to hunt for revelations that could "have a direct and vital application to the happiness of us all". New Scientist has diversified hugely since then, especially since the advent of the digital age, but we'd like to think we still hold true to the values we expressed at our birth.
