Everest had only been climbed twice, the Mariana trench was unconquered and only the third ever expedition to the South Pole reached its goal 3 weeks before The New Scientist was launched. The idea that Mars was at least partially covered in vegetation was "fairly well established". In quite a few other ways, too, science and technology were unrecognisable.
