Although it features libraries from the USA, The Thriuing Library describes many challenges familiar to public librarians in the UK, in particular cuts in library funding; privatisation of public sector agencies; commercial competition, competition from the internet and other information technologies; and branch closures and reductions in staffing and opening hours. In this book, Marylaine Block sets out to identify not just how libraries can survive under such pressures, but how they can thrive.rnThe "thriving libraries" described were identified in a three ways: libraries winning at least 60 per cent of votes in recent library referenda, libraries winning a top ten HAPLR (Hennen's American Public Library Ratings) for at least two years, plus libraries known personally to the author. So the case studies featured are taken from what could be argued to be currently the best libraries in the USA.
