It is possible to learn quite a bit about a hardware cryptographic implementation by running side-channel analysis. Using correlated power analysis with averaged traces, it is possible to determine that the AES implementation studied is likely a hybrid of hardware and software. This specific implementation is very leaky. Unprotected hardware implementations can be cracked in thousands of traces by a skilled analyst. However, a CNN deep learning attack can reduce the preprocessing required to achieve good results. This is important because some of these pre-processing techniques, such as trace alignment, require advanced skills to perfect.
