Pfi Rescue Plan Stalls

Treasury ministers were this week stalling on public cash injections for private finance initiative (PFI) deals for major projects like the M25 widening because of fears that they could over-complicate deals nearing financial close. Officials claimed they wanted to allow more time for last year's bank bailout funds to trickle through to infrastructure investment. The setback puts the Treasury on a collision course with prime minister Gordon Brown. Last week he promised action within days to secure the completion of delayed PFI deals. Brown told the House of Commons Public Liaison Committee last week that the government had been examining the problems PFI schemes were experiencing as a result of bank funding shortages.
