ETHICS AS A NEW DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

The data misuse scandals of 2018 gave us 'Techlash'. What was once the concern of a few privacy advocates has broadened into a much wider array of voices driving debate around digital design philosophy and ethics. In our new era of 'surveillance capitalism', data can be a scary thing. The increasing presence, complexity and autonomy of algorithms and bots create many moral challenges. The onus should be on both designers and data scientists to be accountable and respectful towards people's data, while preventing abuse. And yet many in the field feel privacy is not their concern. Apple, however, is taking strides in the right direction. Late in 2018, the company purchased a little known AI outfit called Silk Labs (https:/etm.ag/2WyZVWy). Silk Labs creates AI software that's light enough to fit onto consumer hardware like cameras, meaning Apple's interests in AI can be achieved without the cloud.
