The nucleus of a eukaryotic cell con-tains all the information needed for that cell to proliferate, differentiate or undergo programmed death (apoptosis). Which of these programmes is followed depends on signals sent to the nucleus in response to external cues such as growth factors. These bind to receptors at the plasma membrane and transduce signals to the inside through the generation of seco'nd messengers. On page 697 of this issue, Topham et al. present a new twist to one of the mechanisms by which this occurs.
