The rise of Taiwan over the past two decades has been meteoric. In the 1960s, it was a poor developing economy with no significant research infrastructure and impoverished universities. Now, the island of 23 million is a global player in the semiconductor industry. It is home to the world's two largest silicon wafer foundries and numerous dynamic start-up companies producing some of the most advanced designs for chips. There are also several star companies in computer manufacture, telecommunications and optoelectronics.
