Within microbiology, cell culture and many disciplines that examine cell suspensions, it is necessary to determine cell concentration. Automated cell counting facilitates this time-consuming process, which was traditionally done by hand. Cell biologists, molecular biologists and biochemists count cells prior to cell culture or other processes such as transfection and real-time PCR, both of which require an accurate and consistent number of input cells. The hemocyter has been a tool commonly used in research, yet it is vulnerable to subjective data and therefore easily capable of compromising results. Recently there have been a number of advancements made in the area of cell counting, allowing increased analysis throughput and improved accuracy.
