Oil is now gushing into the Gulf of Mexico from BP's crippled well at a rate of 35,000 to 60,000 barrels (5.5 million to 9.5 million litres) a day, according to US federal estimates. Facing a media scrum and criticism from US politicians, BP's chief executive, Tony Hayward (pictured), gave low-key answers at a tense congressional hearing in Washington DC on 17 June, revealing little about the causes of the disaster.
