In 1998, the Human Genome Project - a publicly funded investigation which promised to uncover the DNA sequences that make up the human genome - was well under way, when a dramatic announcement threatened to tear the project apart. Geneticist Craig Venter declared that his private company, Celera, could sequence the genome cheaper and faster than the publicly funded effort. What ensued was a bitter rivalry and a race for results.
