The Novartis research vision and approach for treating patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia

Novartis, in collaboration with the chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) research community, is pursuing treatment strategies that explore the effects of Tasigna® (nilo-tinib) in patients with CML. Our vision is to address minimal residual disease (MRD), the major cause of relapse when a patient is in remission. This research aims to develop approaches that will allow patients the opportunity to safely and effectively suspend tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy, while maintaining levels of MRD that are either undetectable or are below the level at which patients may be at risk for progression to more advanced phases of the disease; this is effectively termed a treatment-free remission (TFR). This white paper will discuss recent and ongoing research efforts by Novartis and the CML research community to identify the most appropriate patients as candidates for this treatment approach.
