While the curb is usually located in a public right-of-way, what is placed there can be fraught with anxiety, hostile public discourse, and even mistrust of the elected public officials. One of the great things about working as a solid waste consulting is that yesterday there were waste issues, today there are waste issues, and tomorrow there will be also. However boring that may sound to those not "of the industry," the opposite is true, and every day is an adventure into the unknown. This industry is what movies are made from, and, oh yes, let us not forget one of our favorite characters, Tony Soprano! Regardless of the myriad public or political reasons that could be discussed for wanting to increase the removal of recyclable materials from the wastestream, it is accepted through the waste industry that jurisdictions continually look at their respective diversion rate, recycling rates, and what's left in the wastestream going to their chosen disposal site.
