After 10 months of honing my efficiency alertness to a fanatical edge behind the wheel of our long-term Chevy Volt, getting into my next extended-term ride, this BMW 528i, gave me pause. Naturally I'm expecting it to be 5 Series magnificent, a sweet-spot blend of not-too-big, not-too-small, 3 Series/7 Series qualities. But expecting and delivering are two different things. What if it's actually a collision of those 3 and 7 Series qualities? And what's to become of my nascent connoisseur's appreciation of energy efficiency? In that regard, BMW has at least given me something to work with, as beneath our 528i's snow-white hood is a genuinely interesting engineering exercise in making acceptable power from less displacement.
