You wouldn't really notice the Playpen on a weekday. Just a few hundred yards off the Chicago waterfront north of downtown, the calm water is protected by a notch in the shoreline, and if you were tooling around in a boat, you'd see a few cruisers taking advantage of the good bottom for anchoring. Approach this stretch of water on a Saturday, however, and it's a very different scene. The Playpen becomes the province of Chicago's young and restless, an all-day partying singles crowd with the stamina for a full weekend of revelry. They come to dance, drink and mingle aboard everything from PWCs to the occasional megayacht, and the boats are rafted-up in numbers that would impress those who are loyal to famous party coves like Travis Lake in Texas and Copper Canyon on Havasu.
