Spanish Wells

Spanish wells is lacking some of the things that are synonymous with a vacation in the Bahamas. There aren't any upscale restaurants, the gift shops are just sections of hardware and grocery stores and there aren't any bars on the island. However, Spanish Wells is a prosperous commercial fishing town that welcomes tourists but doesn't alter its way of life for them, and therein lies its unique charm. My first visit, nearly two decades ago, was for emergency repairs to my boat. The parts I needed would have been difficult to find in most Bahamian towns, particularly on Easter Sunday, but since 75 percent of the island's economy is driven by commercial fishing, the locals understood my predicament. The owners of the well-stocked marine hardware store and boatyard gladly opened shop to resolve my prob-lem.
