Today's modern automobile uses highly sophisticated engine and fuel management controls to extract greater performance from an engine. Automotive emissions also are part of that performance equation. The oxygen (O_2) sensor, with its constant measurement and readings of the oxygen levels in exhaust gases, is a critical element in the state-of-the-art world of modern automobile engine control. It must operate to specification, reliably, for tens of thousands of miles in order to keep emissions in check and performance up to par. While the O_2 sensor is a critical part of the emissions component complement, most vehicle owners do not even know that their vehicles have one. In addition, many service techs do little with the O_2 sensor(s) in customer vehicles until either it fails an emissions test or one or more O_2 sensors are found to be ready for replacement.
