There is no doubt that the knock-on effect of the "credit crisis" is being reflected in the volume of transactions in the ship sale and purchase market, although prices are proving remarkably resilient to the negative news emanating from the global markets. With period earnings still at very firm levels and with many owners having built up considerable "war chests" of funds over the past few lucrative years, sellers are being encouraged to stick to their asking prices. During March, it was in fact buyers, surprisingly, who were forced to pay the sellers' asking prices in order to secure tonnage as we finally saw the first sales of modern Handymax, Panamax and Cape-size units of 2008.
