TRL and Lloyd's Register advise on energy

A study commissioned by the Department for Transport into how to operate branch lines if diesel power becomes impractical has been completed by the Transport Research Laboratory, in conjunction with Lloyd's Register Rail. The study looked at energy storage devices such as batteries and flywheels. It concluded batteries are a feasible form of propulsion, but are much more expensive than diesels at present.
