Harley-Davidson assembles up to 600 heavy-duty motorcycles daily on a JIT basis at its final assembly plant in York, Pa. But there were troubles in the receiving department managing the flow of parts needed to build those motorcycles. "We're receiving a lot of different OEM parts, including metal stampings, castings, forgings, electrical components, seats, you name it," recalls Jim Meech, packaging engineering leader. "Which all added up to a lot of disposable packaging materials to get rid of."
