If you look at the recent past, we had an affluent society with an economy that was built on making money on other people's activities. Manufacturers no longer manufactured; they outsourced everything. I remember going to a manufacturing automation conference where no one wanted their son or daughter to go to work in a manufacturing plant. That economy has burst and my fear is that we've lost a lot of manufacturing expertise. My hope is that in the recovery, the best and brightest-like our Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) grads-aren't going to gravitate to finance but will focus on how we can become more productive and get back our manufacturing advantage.
