Many recent projects have called for radiused ends being formed on the ends of square and flat stock. At the last ME show I purchased an 80mm chuck to attach to a 100mm rotary table. It was apparent that the most efficient way to machine a radius with any precision was to drill a centre through hole in the end of the stock and attach it to a spigot which could be held in the three jaw chuck. The original set-up is shown in photo 3 and was my first attempt to prove the concept. It was a single bolt into a centrally threaded spigot; the spigot in the three jaw chuck automatically aligned the work for cutting the radius. Taking too large a bite by the cutter was potentially disastrous and I employed clamps to stop the workpiece swinging and jamming if it came loose. I used a tiny feed and completed the cut successfully.
