Lab of Things: Building a Research Platform for Connected Devices in the Home and Beyond

Focused towards researchers deploying sensors and devices to collect data in homes and beyond, Microsoft's Lab of Things (LoT) enables research studies to scale beyond what is possible today. LoT brings down the barriers of deploying, managing, updating and collecting data in research studies, and reduces the upfront engineering cost of running stable and repeatable experiments. LoT was released in July 2013, and as of May 2014, it has been downloaded more than 7,000 times, being used by researchers in a variety of research domains such as sustainability and aging in-place. We envision that LoT will continue to be used in additional research domains, and will benefit from greater academic research community involvement and leadership.
