Business rates alone cannot be used to ease councils' funding pressures because the two are not correlated, local government experts have stressed. Giving evidence to the Communities and Local Government Committee this week, president of the Society of County Treasurers (SCT), Sheila Little, said 75% business rates retention was a step in the right direction but it would not ease pressures on councils.
